Negotiations on a settlement package with Ng\u0101ti Tama began in April 1998. The Deed of Settlement was agreed by an exchange of letters between the Crown and Ngati Tama is the Crown\u2019s formal offer of settlement for Ngati Tama\u2019s historical claims against the Crown under the Treaty of Waitangi.<\/p>\n
Ng\u0101ti Tama was represented in negotiations by the Claims Progression Team led by\u00a0Greg White.<\/p>\n
The Office of Treaty Settlements with the support of Treasury, Ministry of Fisheries and the Department of Conservation, represented the Crown in day to day negotiations.<\/p>\n
The Minister in Charge of Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Hon Margaret Wilson, represented the Crown in high-level negotiations with Ng\u0101ti Tama.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n
The Crown and representatives of Ng\u0101ti Tama agreed on the terms of a Deed of Settlement which was then put to members of Ng\u0101ti Tama for ratification.<\/p>\n
The Deed provided for an apology, acknowledgements, a payment of $14.5 million dollars and the transfer of 1800 hectares of land.<\/p>\n
The Minister in Charge of Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Margaret Wilson said the agreement to put the settlement to Ng\u0101ti Tama for ratification brought the end of a long-standing grievance.<\/p>\n
\"The negotiators have proposed a fair settlement which provides redress for proven wrongs done in the past. The matter is now in the hands of the individual descendants of Ng\u0101ti Tama and I look forward to their decision\".<\/p>\n
