BACKGROUND<\/h3>\n

Negotiations on a settlement package with Ng\u0101ti Tama began in April 1998. The Deed of Settlement was agreed by an exchange of letters between the Crown and Ngati Tama is the Crown\u2019s formal offer of settlement for Ngati Tama\u2019s historical claims against the Crown under the Treaty of Waitangi.<\/p>\n

Ng\u0101ti Tama was represented in negotiations by the Claims Progression Team led by\u00a0Greg White.<\/p>\n

The Office of Treaty Settlements with the support of Treasury, Ministry of Fisheries and the Department of Conservation, represented the Crown in day to day negotiations.<\/p>\n

The Minister in Charge of Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Hon Margaret Wilson, represented the Crown in high-level negotiations with Ng\u0101ti Tama.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

NGATI TAMA DEED OF SETTLEMENT ACT 2003<\/h3>\n

The Crown and representatives of Ng\u0101ti Tama agreed on the terms of a Deed of Settlement which was then put to members of Ng\u0101ti Tama for ratification.<\/p>\n

The Deed provided for an apology, acknowledgements, a payment of $14.5 million dollars and the transfer of 1800 hectares of land.<\/p>\n

The Minister in Charge of Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Margaret Wilson said the agreement to put the settlement to Ng\u0101ti Tama for ratification brought the end of a long-standing grievance.<\/p>\n

\"The negotiators have proposed a fair settlement which provides redress for proven wrongs done in the past. The matter is now in the hands of the individual descendants of Ng\u0101ti Tama and I look forward to their decision\".<\/p>\n

TREATY CLAIM MILESTONES<\/h3>\n

1987<\/strong> - Stephen Taitoko White registered the Ng\u0101ti Tama claim with the Waitangi Tribunal, on behalf of Ng\u0101ti Tama (17 September 1987 Wai 135).<\/p>\n

1988<\/strong> - Ng\u0101ti Tama wananga held

1991<\/strong> - Waitangi Tribunal hearings into the Taranaki claims began (at Owae marae). In all, 12 hearings were held around Taranaki marae.\u3000Oral submissions were made by Pateriki Te Rei, Stephen Taitoko White; Te Aramau Lake, Peter Te Maihengia White and Greg White.<\/p>\n

1996<\/strong> - The Waitangi Tribunal released an interim report to enable settlement negotiations between Taranaki iwi and the Crown to commence.<\/p>\n

1996<\/strong> - The Ng\u0101ti Tama Iwi Development Trust mandated to negotiate with the Crown on behalf of Ng\u0101ti Tama.<\/p>\n

1998<\/strong> - Claims negotiations proper began. Greg White was selected to be the Chief Negotiator for Ng\u0101ti Tama.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong> - Heads of Agreement between Ng\u0101ti Tama and the Crown was signed at the Pukearuhe Marae in September 1999.<\/p>\n

2001<\/strong> - The Deed of Settlement was ratified (with 98% of the membership in support).<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong> - (November) The Ng\u0101ti Tama Settlement Act became law.<\/p>\n
